Using a cartridge (which looks very much like a large oil filter) provides some benefits that a sand filter can't match. Because of the cartridge's construction, it will catch smaller particles than sand. Water quality is better with a cartridge filter system because of its ability to catch these smaller particles.
Cartridge filters are also recommended where water restrictions occur. Cartridge filters do not require backwashing, which can use hundreds of gallons of water. A cartridge filter is cleaned by removing the cartridge element, hosing it off and soaking it in filter cleaner for an hour or two. When the cartridge is not too dirty, it can simply be rinsed off with a hose and re-installed without soaking in cleaner. Cartridges are relatively inexpensive (more expensive than sand) and need to be replaced every season or two depending on usage.
